Basic Function and Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, performs, supervises, and coordinates professional civil or structural engineering work in the field and office. Civil Engineers are the resident engineer on construction projects, perform complex engineering research and design project work, and have responsibility for a wide variety of engineering projects or programs. As project engineers, Civil Engineers may lead groups of professionals and supervise technical staff.
The Associate Civil Engineer classification is the advanced-level supervisory classification of the series. Incumbents perform responsible and complex civil engineering duties and serve in a supervisory capacity over professional and sub-professional engineering personnel within a complex engineering function or operating unit. The Junior Civil Engineer classification is the entry level class of the series. Incumbents perform technical civil engineering duties related to an assigned function. The Assistant Civil Engineer classification is the experienced, licensed professional-level which performs technical civil engineering duties and provides work direction and guidance to employees at entry and sub-professional levels.
Education and Experience/ Licenses and Other Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and two years of experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Registration as a Professional Engineer licensed by the State of California as a Civil Engineer. Valid California Driver’s License.

A valid driver’s license may be required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC § 160020.
