The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Johns Hopkins University is looking for a curious, driven, and persuasive Content Marketing Specialist to join our team. The Communications Specialist plays an integral role as part of the marketing and communications team, helping to drive the development and execution of print and digital communications.

They will drive communications plans for secondary stakeholder audiences (including parents, families, educators, and high school counselors) and serve as our primary content developer for access and affordability-related communications for prospective students while ensuring content is compelling, factual, audience-focused, and within brand standards. As a part of a creative team, this role brings original ideas to conceive, revamp, and revise a wide range of marketing materials.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications for Undergraduate Admissions, this position will work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Student Financial Support, administrators, admissions counselors, and other staff to support communication, recruitment, and yield efforts.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Writes and curates goal-driven content around affordability, cost of attendance, and holistic support for students for print publications, email campaigns, website and blogs, presentations and speeches, video scripts, and social media.
  • Writes and evaluates communications through an accessibility lens to ensure our content is clear, direct, easy to understand, and available in multiple formats and languages.
  • Represents diverse perspectives throughout content and creates content for non-traditional and underrepresented audiences.
  • Acts as a key member of the Financial Aid Messaging & Presentations working group and keeps abreast of financial aid policies and procedures to make recommendations on positioning for relevant audiences.
  • Conducts interviews with students, faculty, and staff to curate content for print and digital formats.
  • Ensures that all content is fresh and current, has a consistent voice and tone, and aligns with the overarching Undergraduate Admissions identity guidelines.
  • Regularly updates the admissions website to ensure content is fresh, accurate, and up to date.
  • Collaborates with major school offices, departments, and student groups to capture student and community stories, and craft the stories for a public audience.
  • Participates in planning and brainstorming sessions with office leadership to ensure that content in all areas remains creative and effective.
  • Edits own work and the work of others, to include re-writing when necessary.
  • Serves as an expert on university and undergraduate admissions copywriting style guidelines.
  • Completes fact-checking, grammar-checking, proofreading, and other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new content for the web and publications, while also maintaining a collaborative relationship with staff and outside vendors.
  • Demonstrated abilities as a writer are required, conveying complex subject matter to a general audience.
  • Must have a strong and demonstrated background in writing for multiple audiences.
  • Knowledge of basic design skills to build out graphic content in Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva.
  • The candidate must be organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • The candidate must also be open to, and seek out, feedback on their writing and demonstrate that they are able to implement feedback efficiently and effectively.
  • Must work well in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage multiple high-priority assignments and be comfortable collaborating and taking feedback from different constituents across campus.
  • Must understand the importance of effective communications and be eager to fully understand the admissions cycle as well as best marketing practices in higher education.
  • Communicate well with technical staff and other members of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years related experience in a writing or marketing role.
  • Prior experience managing publications and managing website edits in WordPress.
  • Experience in a higher education setting is a plus.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
