Job Description

Engineer III – Global Product Development Processes

Put a LIFT in Your Career! Hyster-Yale Group, Inc. (HYG), a world-class manufacturer of industrial lift trucks, has an outstanding opportunity for a talented engineer in our facility located in the Portland, Oregon area. HYG designs, engineers, manufactures, sells, and services a comprehensive line of lift trucks and aftermarket parts marketed globally under the and brand names. We are one of the global leaders in the Materials Handling industry and have been building relationships and partnering with our customers, suppliers, dealers, and employees for over 90 years.

Responsibilities:

Join a dynamic and independent-minded group charged with developing the processes and systems used by tomorrow’s engineers. Primary responsibilities of this position include development and support within a proprietary Static and Dynamic Stability calculation engine that determines the safe lifting capacities of forklifts. The typical workflow is to engage with design engineering teams to understand new product development and considerations that impact stability and develop test plans in order to plan the correlation of calculated data with actual data prior to product release. This program is written in the C+ programming language with SQL Database backend so a high interest in learning and becoming proficient in these skills is a requirement.

This position involves leveraging broad problem-solving skills, particularly when resolving discrepancies between actual and theoretical results or unraveling code logic to understand how past trucks were handled. Candidates will also gain exposure to diverse cultures as the engineering teams they engage with could be in Brazil, China, Europe, or Japan. Grow, share, and innovate tomorrow’s Product Design process with a company that values quality products and great people.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Very high proficiency and interest in statics, dynamics, mathematics, and numerical analysis techniques (i.e. free body diagrams, cornering forces, curve fitting).
  • Experience in a structured programming language (C+, C, Java, Visual Basic, Python, etc) and IIS-based websites, with a high interest in becoming proficient.
  • Exposure to basic concepts of Windows operating systems, basic networking, and databases (SQL Preferred).

Additional Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail. The implications of not getting the truck’s maximum safe capacity correct are rather self-evident. The company counts on us to get it right.
  • Quality focused. Adhere to established procedures and understand global regulatory and customs requirements related to the lift truck industry.
  • Familiar with the design of components, assemblies, or complex vehicle systems, drafting practices, CAD, drawings., and engineering analysis.
  • Decision Making: Exhibit professional judgment and a practical understanding of issues; demonstrate an ability to set priorities and take decisive actions to derive a solution even when data may be ambiguous.
  • Innovative: Creative thinking, troubleshooting complex systems, and develop unique solutions to new problems.
  • Systematic Problem Solving: Demonstrate ability to apply structured principles and methods to resolve difficult or constrained challenges.
  • Teamwork and Flexibility: Function well in a global team environment. Proactively solicit opinions. Support and champion group decisions while being respectful of diverse cultures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills when dealing with highly technical subject matter.
  • High proficiency with MS Office tools.
  • Exposure to, and interest in, industrial equipment (materials handling, automotive, agricultural, or similar machines) is highly desirable.
  • This position does not include hands-on work with forklifts or any physical requirements.
  • At least 2 days spent in the office in Fairview, OR (3 days WFH), although initial office requirements during training might be higher on an as needed basis.
