POSITION: Mechanical Engineer – Designer

LOCATION: Blackfoot, Idaho

JOB SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Engineer at Spudnik Equipment Company is responsible for the design and engineering of structural and component parts for agricultural equipment that will plant, harvest, and transport and handle potatoes and other crops. Teamwork and customer service skills are important as Engineers are expected to work directly and indirectly with customers, vendors, plant personnel, and other engineers. Quality of workmanship, attention to detail and timelines, teamwork, and self-motivation are critical assets for this position. Tasks and projects typically include research, component selection, design, testing, documentation, and production support. Engineer must be willing and able to work with their hands, working in outdoor and inclement weather conditions at times in addition to designing in an office environment. The Engineer will demonstrate high levels of responsibility and accountability, working effectively and efficiently on all assigned tasks and projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design agricultural equipment and components using requirements provided by sales staff, customers, service technicians, and management.
  • Benchmark, analyze, and compare current equipment models and prototype designs to industry standards, and be prepared to present findings to the project team.
  • Ensure equipment safety and quality by calculating and confirming stress in critical design areas using standard engineering processes.
  • Troubleshoot structural and design problems on existing machines using feedback provided by sales staff, customers, service technicians, production personal, and management.
  • Present options of the project to the project team and/or upper management and find the best solution for Spudnik.
  • Use designated CAD systems to design improvements and upgrades on current equipment as well as prototype machines or sub-assemblies.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers effectively and professionally.
  • Create, maintain, and provide complete and accurate documentation of designs including schematics, prints, diagrams, quality check sheets, and bills of material.
  • Specify the final assembly process for successful equipment production.
  • Redirect efforts in projects or project focus due to customer or production needs.
  • Work closely with management members to keep a clear focus on company goals and objectives.
  • Work in a team environment with little or no supervision.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
  • Fill in during team member absences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Well-developed knowledge and understanding of mechanical principles and applications.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic, electric and electronic schematics.
  • Background in agricultural industry preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructional drawings and schematics.
  • Ability to effectively work with CAD systems, spreadsheets, word processing documents, and other applicable computer systems and software.
  • Ability to travel frequently on day trips and occasional overnight trips.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TYPICALLY OPERATED:

  • Basic clerical machines including computer, printer, adding machine, telephone, fax, etc.
  • Other machines or equipment specific to departmental or facility needs.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Medium work involving:

TYPICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and temperature extremes. May have temperature changes due to working inside a shop. At times noise is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, odors, dust mists, gases or poor ventilation. There is air and or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
