General Summary

The Culture Production Process Engineer reports to the Process Manager and is primarily responsible for safety, quality, yield and efficiency improvement initiatives in the Fermentation operations. This person will manage process-engineering projects, provide technical support, and improve existing manufacturing processes. In addition, this person acts as a liaison between engineering, maintenance and culture for processes in the plant.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Drives improvements in safety, quality, yield and efficiency in the Culture Fermentation and Packaging Departments.

Participates on cross-functional local and international teams for the on-going improvement of equipment and processes and other assignments.

Focused on reducing quality issues related to contamination, equipment, and cleaning.

Primary responsible for cleaning processes in the plant (e.g., CIP).

Acts as a technical resource to manufacturing, engineering, sales and marketing, and R&D.

Works with operators and supervisors to solve problems in the plant.

Works with Production, Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Maintenance on upgrades and projects – including small capital projects. Coordinate process work associated with large projects with Engineering. Consults with engineering and maintenance personnel relative to modification of machines, equipment and buildings to improve production and quality of products.

Makes recommendations for use of equipment and improving equipment for culture production. Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.

Coordinates processes with affiliates worldwide to achieve optimum efficiencies and yields.

Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.

Involved with process management department to prioritize the optimization of current and future processes. Evaluate, recommend and implement process improvements for the culture plant.

Analyzes and plans work force utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency. Analyzes operating procedures and equipment functions to reduce processing time and cost.

Works with Culture Process Manager to ensure work assignments and process engineering projects are identified, prioritized, scheduled, and completed on time and in full.

Writes reports, and utilizes quality improvement tools, such as fishbone charts, histograms, affinity diagrams, etc. Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.

Annual international travel is required up to 5% of the time for this position.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of Fermentation upstream processing, Food or Pharma hygienic, aseptic, and cGMP design, and especially CIP and SIP processes. Experience with frozen product handling, blending, and packaging is a plus.

Possess strong verbal, written, communication, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Skilled at business problem solving, conflict resolution, influencing others and change management.

Ability to work in local and global cross-functional environment.

Experience with IT and automation implementations (PLCs and HMIs) in production and production-related areas preferred.

Lean & Six Sigma training or certification, with the ability to use the Six Sigma methodologies, tools and statistical software preferred.

These characteristics are normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and a minimum of three or more years of work experience within a process-driven manufacturing environment. A chemical engineering or biomedical degree is preferred.
