The National Poultry Technology Center at Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Research Engineer I/II.
Mission: Improve bottom line profitability of the live production sector of the US poultry industry by providing timely applied research and education that contributes to increased efficiencies in housing, equipment, energy and environmental control.

This is a three year limited term appointment. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Aid in the planning, coordination, delivery of outreach and Extension educational services, events, and projects for the NPTC related to commercial poultry growers, poultry farms, housing systems, and equipment systems.
- Maintain and service the NPTC demonstration and teaching building, support structures and equipment as well as teaching and research equipment; coordinate NPTC building purchases and payment of invoices.
- Maintain NPTC databases; coordinate the development and distribution of NPTC educational materials.
- Assist in performing program evaluations; develop, construct, and coordinate systems to monitor and collect data from research projects and poultry grower farms.
- Calibrate research equipment and test meters.
- Summarize and analyze research data while assisting with the preparation of research reports, professional papers, and manuscripts, and grants.
- Develop and make presentations and participate in professional meetings and conferences; Prepare reports for faculty, administrators and stakeholder/clientele groups.
- Assist in developing marketing plans and publicity materials; and perform other duties as assigned.
May supervise employees but supervision is not the main focus of the job.
Education and Experience:
Level I: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and no experience.
Level II: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering plus 2 years professional experience in engineering and research practices and principles. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Substitutions allowed for Education:
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills and technical excellence as well as having the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Must have a basic knowledge of the US commercial agricultural industries.
Must be able to safely use basic shop tools such as woodworking tools, battery powered drills and saws, metal working tools including metal shears and metal break.
Must be able to lift at least thirty pounds and participate in construction projects at the NPTC facility and on cooperating poultry farms.
*Must be able to independently drive to events and farms to perform duties.
Minimum Technology Skills
Must have a working knowledge in Microsoft Office (power point, excel, word), and have a Basic understanding of drafting software (AutoCad or equivalent), data logging software and statistical software.
Must have a working knowledge of using sensors/meters to measure physical/chemical properties and an understanding of how to calibrate sensors/meters.
Minimum License and Certifications
Valid driver’s license required.
Desired qualifications include the following: experience in stakeholder/client engagement and in providing technical assistance on live production issues; experience writing and implementing technical information; working/advanced knowledge of the US poultry industry including experience within the integrated company structure, commercial housing structures, feed and water equipment, environmental control equipment, animal husbandry practices, company and grower relations, and emerging trends; experience in applied poultry housing research and data collection; experience in educational programming related to commercial poultry growers, poultry farms, housing systems, and equipment systems; experience with new technologies and machine learning techniques towards precision animal management.
