Software Developer Associate

Mission: Supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), combining our vision, NOAA’s mission for science, service, and stewardship along with NCEI’s goal of providing access to high-value environmental, atmospheric, geophysical, and coastal data. Through our partnerships, we forward data services and stewardship, contributing a talented workforce, innovation, and design, while fostering long-lasting relationships that support further discovery and access to high-value scientific information.

This position is part of a team supporting the Data Stewardship Division and IT Services Division. This team works on a variety of science data and metadata management systems to monitor production processes, develop and deploy software changes to the test and production tiers, and assess data and metadata quality. The position will:

  • Be suited for a motivated individual who is starting a career in technology, or in climatology, meteorology, or related environmental science.
  • Require monitoring service logs, data files, and directories to ascertain service status.
  • Require performance of data management tasks.
  • Require integration testing of code prior to and after software deployments.
  • Require attention to detail and following established processes.

Required Skills

  • Command line experience in Unix or Linux
  • Basic programming experience, especially in Unix/Linux/Python shell scripting
  • A problem-solving attitude
  • Ability to work remotely on a geographically dispersed team
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

Preferred Skills

  • Experience monitoring, deploying, and maintaining production applications
  • Experience with Agile methodologies
  • Experience with databases, SQL queries
  • Software development experience, especially using Java, Python, Groovy, and/or Grails
  • Familiarity with revision control/deployment/CI/CD tools like git and GitLab.
  • Familiarity with meteorological and climate science.
  • Familiarity with THREDDS Data Server (TDS) operation and configuration.
  • Familiarity with meteorological and/or climate data formats, e.g NetCDF, GRIB, and/or generic data file formats like CSV and JSON.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

● Required Experience: 4+ years of related experience (Bachelors degrees are equivalent to four years of experience.)

● Security Clearance Level: Must be able to obtain Public Trust (T2)

● Location: Hybrid (Stennis Space Center, MS or Asheville, NC). May be able to work up to 100% telework if desired but must be able to drive to a NCEI facility when needed.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40

Travel Required: Less than 10%

Telecommuting Options: Hybrid

Work Location: USA MS Stennis Space Center

Additional Work Locations: USA NC Asheville
