Duties/Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will have experience in scientific software development and a passion for staying up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in software engineering. The Software Developer will play a critical role in supporting the maintenance and sustainment of high-quality scientific software at NOAA JPSS, and will work closely with software developers, scientific projects, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of enterprise services for ingest and metadata management.
- Analyze root cause of software anomalies
- Code, test, and integrate software modifications to meet customer requirements
- Develop software in accordance with architectural, design, security, and coding standards
- Develop and execute unit tests and software integration tests
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to troubleshoot problems, analyze issues, generate documentation, integrate, test, and/or perform software updates
- Evaluate emerging technologies for capability, supportability, and extensibility in support of system sustainment and modernization efforts
- Interact with users and customers regarding requirements, problem solving, and general support
- Perform all duties in accordance with software development and configuration management processes and procedures
- Monitor and report device health and status, resource utilization rates, uptime, outage and anomaly tracking, and threat detection/prevention
- Document problem resolution activities in the ticketing system
- Recommend and support procurements for hardware, software, and manufacturer maintenance (as needed)
- Create and maintain documents and Standard Operating Procedures
Required Skills:
- 2-4 years in one of the following technologies Java, C/C++, FORTRAN, Python, Perl, UNIX shells (bash, tcsh), SQL (Oracle, Hibernate)
- Experience using the following technologies: UNIX (RHEL), Build systems (make, Ant), and Source code control (ClearCase, Git/Bitbucket)
- Experience with Microsoft Visual Studio and NetBeans IDEs
- Experience with UML software design tools (Enterprise Architect)
- Programming experience with MS SQLServer DB and/or Postgres DB
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn Fortran
- Programming experience with scripting languages (Perl, JavaScript, PowerShell, etc.)
- Strong working knowledge of Service Oriented architectures
- Experience with Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies
- Experience with Git and other software version control or management tools
- Experience with Atlassian tool suite (Jira, FishEye/Crucible, BitBucket, etc.)
- Self-starter and motivation to learn
- The ability to obtain a security clearance
Desired skills
- Federal government experience
- Familiarity with the NOAA’s JPSS Program, including its mission, infrastructure, and data requirements. – Experience in the Aerospace or Satellite industry. – Experience with Agile development methodologies. – Active Security Clearance.
- 0-1 years’ experience with Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (preferably in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.) BS 2+ Years, MS 0+ or HS 8+
